Primary Omental Torsion in an Old Woman: Imaging Techniques Can Prevent Unnecessary Surgical Interventions
Torsion and/or infarction of the greater omentum are rare but well-recognized clinical situations which present as an acute abdomen. The etiology is unknown and speculative. In most cases, the pathology is right sided and clinical presentation consists of an acute or subacute flank pain with mild peritonism usually evoking appendicitis or cholecystitis. متن کاملMRI can prevent unnecessary arthroscopy.
We compared the practice of four orthopaedic consultants as regards the use of MRI and arthroscopy to diagnose problems of the knee. In one year 324 arthroscopies and 66 MR scans were performed for this purpose. We found that MRI is a reliable and cheaper alternative to 'diagnostic arthroscopy'. We consider that patients with definite clinical signs merit an early 'therapeutic arthroscopy', but...
متن کاملPrimary omental torsion in children: case report
Primary omental torsion is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain, we report a case of 10-year-old boy admitted with crampy abdominal pain, routine laboratory tests and plain abdominal radiography was normal, the patient underwent surgical exploration with the initial diagnosis of appendicitis, primary omental torsion was confirmed and the omentum was untwisted, with good postoperative evolution.
متن کاملAcute primary haemorrhagic omental torsion mimicking perforated appendicitis: an unorthodox surgical paradox.
Acute primary haemorrhagic omental torsion is an atypical and deceptive cause of acute abdomen that could closely mimic a myriad of intra-abdominal catastrophes, especially perforated appendicitis. The author reports a 30 years man who had presented with gradually worsening right-sided abdominal pain of 2 days duration. Laboratory work-up and abdominal radiographs were inconclusive. Abdominal s...
متن کاملPrimary omental torsion diagnosed during hysterectomy
Omental torsion is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. It presents with nonspecific symptoms and signs of an acute abdomen, making it difficult to diagnose preoperatively, because symptoms mimic those caused by other conditions such as appendicitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, and other gynecologic diseases. Computed tomography is an effective and useful method to diagnose and exclude othe...
